My name is Carl, and I’m a high school graduate. Before pursuing any higher education, I thought it would be good to take a year off to relax, reflect and get to know myself better. On the 9th of July 2007, I arrive in Beijing and marks the beginning of my one year long adventure in China.
On this blog, I will write about the places I visit, the food I eat, the people I meet and current happenings in modern day China.
The Name
Where does the blog’s name, To Be Rich Is Glorious come from? It is a part of a quote by a former Chinese leader, Deng Xiaoping who during the 1970’s helped open up the Chinese market through many economical reforms. He said, “Poverty is not socialism, to be rich is glorious.” His words have become the mantra of the rapidly developing post-Mao China we see today, and much of China’s success can be attributed to him.
