Prostitution in Beijing
Here in Beijing, prostitution is rampant. You can find prostitutes at clubs, hairdressers, massage parlors and on the streets. The normal price range goes from 100 CNY to as much as 2,000. Prostitution is illegal in China, but it’s pretty hard for the police to bust them, because they’re all covered in some way. Hookers at clubs don’t openly announce their profession, and it’s impossible to see the difference of them and a regular club-going girl. At the hairdressers, how can the police know that they are prostitutes and not just hairdressers? Despite difficulties, the local police has had quite a few successful raids in the past.
The area in Beijing that I live in is called Fulicheng. Several times a week, we get these namecards (pictured above) of massage services with suggestive pictures of girls slipped in under the door while sleeping. Whether they really do massage or not, I’ve yet to find out. But from what I’ve heard, these girls generally do very poor massages. I guess the rest should be left to the imagination.

Police in China generally know who the hairdressers are and who the prostitutes are. Common practice by law enforcement is to extort money from the “xi tou xiao jie” (hair washing girl). The girls are expected to pay 3000-5000 yuan to police or face arrest and prosecution. Rest assured, the police in China have a very clear idea who the pros are and they are taking their cut.

That really depends on how corrupt the local police are. At certain times of year they have a very high quota of arrests to make, which means they often take in girls that aren’t even prostitutes. The best source of information is probably some of the girls working in your neighborhood. The stories they have to tell…

Yes i was in Beijing in October 2007, i could not believe how many over those laneway beauty salons were open past midnight. Theres not many places in the world where you can get a manicure at 3am.

I see none of you knows much about china or the world.
Beijing and china are not like the rest of the world. Very few, if not none, places in the world has the level of corruption and prostitution that china has. And don’t mistake: prostitute’s clients are mainly Chinese, not foreigners. This is part of the traditional chinese culture, prostitution and gambling. Of course, many foreigners make use of these “services” but the percentage is totally insignificant compared with chinese clients. Is true also, that is very difficult to differentiate a prostitute from a normal chinese girl. And when you know chinese as I do (many years living and working in china) you will understand why is that. Very often the line that separates a “professional” from a “decent” chinese girl can’t be found. Especially if you are a foreigner, “professionals” and “decent” will approach you in the same way and you will get very easily the same. The “professional” ask for money. The “decent” will ask for money in other ways (pension, marriage, passport and visa, other country citizenship…); everything and anything will be done as far they can catch money or anything that give them a superior social status that they will use to step in other chinese or human beings and show off without shame and mercy. Like marrying a foreigner. They will cheat, manipulate, extort, lie…. Anything for money. Anything for a single sad little penny. And the stupid foreigner will get cheated by all this being too late, of course, when he realized it (they will be already married, or he will have to pay a large sum to escape from the girl, etc…) That is chinese society.
As mentioned guys, you know nothing about chinese.

2 days in Beijing and I was approached no less than 10 times
I am American and the standard approach was. Hi where you from – oh I am English studen t – can we talk so I can practice.- then it moves on to let’s go have coffee or beer and so it goes
I will say that the later it gets the small talk subsides and they start getting straight to the point
One other thing I noted. -they usually have another girl with them. -sometimes a guy but many times a girl
Not sure why – If its to propose a 3 some or just safety in numbers

I recently traveled to beijing. While walking in the street in late evening hours, it is common that a pimp (woman or man), sometimes well-dressed, approaches you to solicit for a transaction. The prices are about $30-$70 for normal street hookers and goes up for high end ones. Also several times girls (usually two girls together) approached me and offered to go and drink and talk. They said they wanted to improve their English, but it seems they get a cut from the bar for drinks ordered, and some of them talk you into having sex (of course for a price). If you ever want to try a hooker in Beijing, be carefull of going to dark alleys and suspicious places. I have heard stories that after you are done, several guys might storm your room and ask you for money, claiming that they own the place, and they didn’t know the girl or the pimp and thought they are your friend and you have to pay for some wine that they have ordered. Anyway, whatever you do, don’t take a lot of cash or important documents or credit card with you to those settings.

Let us not be fooled, the term ” abused ” has no direct relation to the term “prostitution”. It seems to be a widely accepted phrase now used to specifically conjour negative images in the mind of any reader. Prostitution is exactly and only the transaction of giving oneself for money…nothing more….sex need not even take place. In much the same way we sell ourself to corporate bosses all over the world for cash. Abuse happens on many levels, no one is saying that it dosent, and unfortunately it happens in the prostitution scene, as well as it happens in corporate or work places.
I see nothing wrong with prostitution as long as there is a mutual respect, both parties should be happy after such a transaction. sexual abuse happens thats another topic for discussion.
removing a persons right to be a prostitute is itself a form of abuse.

I am going to Beijing in Feb. 2011. I can not wait to go screwing! Already got a few lined up my first two nights there. 500 CYN or about $75 USD/night for mine but they are nice looking and they will meet me at my hotel. You can get cheaper but with it comes a few extra risks and yes, I know, the risk is there with the more pricey ones too but at least they are better looking

Tina – I think you missed the start of the article. Those are pictures of cards which the author gets under his door – they are advertisements from the girls.
I can tell you that after having lived in Russia and Ukraine for many years, the stories I am reading above could describe Russia or Ukraine too. China is by no means unique, but that doesn’t make it any better.
