Letting Go

It’s pretty unbelievable. 48 hours from now, I’ll be sitting on a plane on my way to Beijing, China. My one year trip comes in two parts. First, I’ll leave July 8th and come back November 10th. Then I’m going back again, the details have yet to be decided.

Me and a few old friends had a little get-together for the last time before I leave today. We went to a nice Turkish restaurant for dinner. After almost 12 years in Sweden, and given Sweden’s large Turkish population, this was actually the first time I eat at a Turkish place. The food was pretty good, I had some grilled lamb and some Turkish beer during dinner. We then had some snacks and tried Turkish hard liquor. The beer was good, but the liquor nothing special.

On my way back home it finally hit me. I had been oppressing the thought of letting go of everything in the back of my head. Family and friends will be missed. New friendships will have to be formed, and since no one is going to be there for me, I’ve got to take care of myself. My mom is not going to be there telling me to sleep at 2 AM in the morning. I’ll sleep whenever I want, loose sleep, get sick and finally miss mother’s words. I am actually a little sad, frightened and empty.

But I’m also excited. I have people to meet and places to go, and when I’m back I’ll be a new man. I’ll be more independent, disciplined and organized. I will have gained valuable life experience and gotten to know myself better.
