I’m Carl - A Professional Interpreter

July 11, 2007 | Author: Carl Pei | Filed under: Lifestyle, Personal

Today I went out and had dinner with my Swedish friend and an American guy; both learning Chinese. After dinner we took a stroll on the main commercial street of Beijing; Wangfujing Dajie.

The American guy sees some fun wheels that you can attach to your shoes, asks the price and buys them immediately for $20 USD (they are worth $6 USD). While he is having fun learning how to maneuver his new toy me and the Swede watch. We’re joking around and talking in Swedish and English.

Slowly one of the sellers approach me from behind and asks: “Do you speak their language?” I say “Yeah” and he goes “Oh, you’re a professional interpreter.” This was a very annoying experience, but also positive in a way; it means my spoken Chinese is fluent enough to be passed as that of a local. And this was not an isolated incident, but the third time something like this happens.

This is something that shows that Chinese as a general have bad self confidence, thinking that another Chinese-looking guy never could be “just friends” with foreigners.
