Bye Bye Beijing

First of all, whoa! I’m in Canton (Guangdong) and it’s unbelievable. I never imagined (up until recently) that I’d ever see Canton. Things are different here for better or worse, but one thing that I like is that it pushes me outside my comfort zone – somewhere I like to be.

I’m currently at Zhuhai (arrived last Thursday) a costal city consisting of three main populated areas, separated by a mountain in the center. It’s just north of Macau. In fact, crossing a short bridge (50m) brings you there. It’s also close to the metropolises Hong-Kong, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Places reachable within the hour via speedboat.

I like this city. It’s small in size and population; I’m going to find a second hand bicycle to explore this city. When the sun is out, there is always a blue sky to go along with it. This is very different from many other Chinese cities suffering heavily from pollution. This little laid-back town is a great place to live.

People talk Cantonese here. Most speak Mandarin too. They usually start with Cantonese, but when you tell them you don’t understand they switch to Mandarin. Not only does this take extra time, but they’ll also know that you’re an outsider, putting you in disadvantage. I’m planning to learn some basic Cantonese to eventually avoid this.
