10 Reasons Why Life in China Was Better

I’m currently back in Sweden, where I’ll stay 20 days total. I’ve stayed 17 days, so I’m back in China very soon. Why am I back you ask? I bought a two-way ticked with a 4 month stay in China. 4 months was enough to see how I felt about it, so I could later decide if I should continue staying there or not. China has been pretty good to me, so this time I’m staying until after the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

During these days in Sweden, I’ve began missing China a little; so here are my 10 reasons to why my life in China was better:

  1. Food: During 4 months, I ate out for lunch and dinner every day. Everything is available for a cheap price there. Japanese? No problem, 5 minute walk to Aeon Jusco (Japanese supermarket chain) where there’s a really nice Japanese restaurant on the third floor with a sushi bar (the rolling band type), good tempura and ramen too. Phad-thai, Korean barbecue? No problem. Also, there’s a host of Chinese restaurants for all Chinese flavors; Cantonese, Sichuan & Northern. Fast food was close at hand too, with KFC and McDonald’s within a 5 minute walk.
  2. Transportation: Taxi everywhere, all the time; have a chat with the taxi driver and you’re at your destination. Effortless. Especially useful when out late.
  3. Climate: While I’m freezing my butt off here in Sweden, it’s still warm enough to wear a t-shirt in Zhuhai. Much better.
  4. Nightlife: Nightlife in Southern China rocks. Party like a Rock Star (you’re free to interpret that ;) ), party until 6 AM. Anything is possible. Clubs and bars are much better renovated, and staff are much friendlier.
  5. Massage: I miss frequenting the massage parlor (non-happy-ending) for a little relaxation once in a while.
  6. Nature: Zhuhai was a small, laid-back city with many trees. It took me 5 minutes to get to the seaside by foot.
  7. Civilization: Zhuhai is situated close to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Macau & Hong-Kong. Whenever you need some fast-living, you know you’re never far.
  8. Fan Following: Sorry guys, but I’m a very good looking guy by Chinese standards. Female attention is inevitable. I sit quietly eating my food in a restaurant, then I look up and immediately all female heads turn away from looking at me. Rinse, repeat. Guaranteed fun.
  9. Friends: My social circle in China is awesome. It consists of very interesting people from all walks of life, some with breathtaking stories to tell. Many of whom are foreigners in China, but many locals too. Naturally I’ll miss my friends there.
  10. Lifestyle: In China I lived & was treated like a Rock Star. There, I had money, friends and much much more. It was the happiest 4 months of my life.

I totally understand. But isn’t it nice to simply get the hell out once in awhile? Maybe it’s because I’ve been here over 6 years, and in Shanghai, no one cares that you’re a laowai. We’re a dime a dozen in this city.

Being the center of attention is ego satisfying for awhile but not for long. It isn’t healthy to need that sort of “look at the strange beast in the window” sort of attention. Enjoy yourself but you need to make it in a place where it’s your ability that gets you noticed. China is interesting for awhile, but give me Sweden (or anywhere in the West) anyday.

@ Eric D - Being laowai doesn’t guarantee you anything. It gives you a little extra attention in the beginning, but it depends what you do with it.

@ jay - Well, it isn’t that type of attention, it’s more the celebrity type. ;)

As a six-year resident of Zhuhai, I can say…without a doubt…that you were in anything BUT the “real” China. But…hey…there are worse places to live. Like the rest of China.

You were stared at not for your handsomeness, or lack thereof, but because you are not Chinese.

Of course when you’re a young, unattached Swede with good bone structure, a little China adventure is a thing to reminisce fondly over. Wait til you have an enlarged prostate and kids who need good schooling. Then you’ll appreciate your land as the true socialist paradise. Unless you’re overrun by Turks before that.
