1 Month in Beijing: Thoughts

August 19, 2007 | Author: Carl Pei | Filed under: Beijing, Personal

Beijing is a great town to live in. There’s a lot of opportunity, interesting people and high-rise skyscrapers. Things that I like. At the same time, prices remain cheap. This time I had to pay for every little thing myself; from toothpaste to the three mealsof a day, so it felt a tad more expensive than previously imagined. But still cheap by international standards.

I can definitely see myself living there in the future. However, only if the pay is right. During my month, I didn’t do a lot of shopping, and ended up spending 8,500 CNY (approx $1120 USD). The average monthly salary is under 3,000 CNY. To be able to live comfortably in Beijing, I estimate that I’ll need at least 25,000 CNY a month after taxes at the current time. Prices are on the rise, so this number would be higher in the future.

In Beijing, you can spend very little on something, but also very much on the same thing. For instance, you could probably have lunch for 5 CNY on the street, but also drop several thousand for lunch in a fancy restaurant. It all depends on what class you’re after.

One thing I didn’t like was Beijingers looking down upon themselves, while showing ultra-respect to foreigners. Many people immediately assume that just because he is a laowai (foreigner), he’s got more money than the Chinese standing next to him. This isn’t always true. Beijingers need to grow up and gain some self confidence and respect for their own people.

But in Beijing, to be rich is glorious by no doubt.
